How to Determine If a Company Is Right for You During Your Interview

How to Determine If a Company Is Right for You During Your InterviewHow to Determine If a Company Is Right for You During Your Interview4 Subtle Ways to Evaluate a Companys Culture During Your InterviewA recent survey revealed a majority of adults value company culture over salary but how can you evaluate a companys culture before taking the job?You might be surprised to learn that mora than half of adults consider a companys culture more important than salary when it comes to job satisfaction, according to a recent Glassdoor survey. Additionally, 77 percent of adults take a companys culture into consideration before even submitting an application and it makes sense. You can have all the right qualifications for a role, but if you dont mesh well with the organization and its team, you ultimately wont be successful, says Amanda Augustine, TopInterviews career expert.Yet, unlike salary and benefits, gauging a good cultural fit isnt always straightforward. You cant necessarily Google n ame of companys culture and find your answers. Even if your search yields a result, youll probably find a bunch of buzzwords like collaborative, fun, innovative, and inclusive. Theres nothing wrong with those, but will they really tell you if the company is a good fit for you?The best time to assess a companys culture is during the vorstellungsgesprch process, where you can make your own observations and ask questions. Not sure where to start? Use these tips to help thoroughly evaluate a companys culture during your next job interview1. Notice the way youre initially receivedYoure told first impressions are everything during job interviews, so you need to dress the part. But what about your first impression of the company? Notice what happens during the first minute of your interview experience. Does a receptionist greet you? Does it binnenseem as though theyve been expecting you? Or are they surprised and flustered? Or is no one around, so you linger awkwardly? The way a company gre ets you can tell you a lot, so keep that in mind.2. Request a tour of the officeYour point of contact will likely offer to show you around the office, but if he or she doesnt, dont be afraid to ask.As you walk around, make mental notes on these specific areasHave employees personalized their workspaces or are they pretty sparse? How are the desks and workspaces arranged? How do employees treat the receptionist? What are the employees wearing? How are they interacting with each other? What do the common areas look like? The meeting rooms?Where are employees eating lunch? Are they eating at their desks or the break room?Taking note of these details will help you better understand the values of the company and its employees.3. Ask the right questionsRemember A job interview should be a two-way street, so ask some questions to help gauge whether or not the company is a good cultural fit for you.Sure, you can simply ask your interviewer to describe the companys culture in three words. But y ou can also ask more subtle questions thatll give you an idea of what the company values. These might includeHow long have you been with this company?Whats your favorite part about working for this company? What personalities tend to be successful here? How does the company recognize employee wins? How often does the company meet as a whole? How often do you have team meetings? Are activities outside the office offered for employees?Whether you value innovation, feedback, affirmation, teamwork, flexibility, or all the above, dont hesitate to form questions around these values and ask them during your interview.4. Evaluate your interviewAfter the actual interview, take some time to evaluate your overall experience.First, consider the interview itself. Note the types of questions the interviewer(s) asked. This will help you better understand whats important to the company and its employees. You might also consider the interview style. Was it a structured interview, which tends to be more formal and organized? Or was it a stress interview, which is designed to see how you react under stress? Or maybe it was unstructured more laid-back and conversational. If the interview style didnt sit well with you, thats something to look at.Second, consider your overall experience. Did you feel at ease? Did you connect with your interviewers? Did you find yourself nodding along as the interviewers answered your questions about company culture or did something in your gut feel off? Finally, consider the entire recruitment process. How quickly has it moved? How many steps has it required? What are the next steps? Are those clear? Has the company valued your time? Answer these questions to yourself, taking note of how smooth the entire process has been.Final thoughts on evaluating company cultureWhen it comes to assessing a companys culture, you can research, ask questions, and chat with as many people as you want, but in the end, youll need to trust your gut. Sure, it sounds chees y, but youll probably have a good or bad feeling about your interview experience, so dont disregard those feelings.Remember Salary and benefits are important, but youll spend most of your days in an office, so you want to feel as though you fit in and can fully support the company and its values. Before assessing the cultural fit of a company in your interview, work with a professional interview coach from our sister site, TopInterview, to gain the confidence you need to ask all the right questions.Editors Note This article was originally published on our sister site, TopInterview.Recommended ReadingHow to Spot a Toxic Workplace Before You Take the JobHow We Helped This Professional Who Was Stuck In His Toxic JobSigns Youre in a Toxic Work Environment and How to Handle ItRelated Articles

What to Do When You Feel Underqualified for Your Job - The Muse

What to Do When You Feel Underqualified for Your Job - The MuseWhat to Do When You Feel Underqualified for Your Job What have I gotten myself into? Its something Ive thought in the first couple weeks of nearly every job Ive ever had. After the agony of job hunting, I found myself in what, at the time, felt even worse I discovered I welches completely underqualified for the job.My responsibilities were daunting, and I felt uncomfortable in my role. Overall, I had no idea what I was doing. Heck, I didnt even know what I was supposed to be doing. And if I did, by miracle of miracles, figure that out, I had to ask for help with nearly every task I was assigned. There was one thing I knew for sure Somewhere along the hiring process, someone had made a mistake, and I certainly wasnt the right part for this job. Sound familiar? The first few days of a new job can leave you feeling completely overwhelmed, and even underqualified. But while its easy to fall into that kind of thinking, its not going to get you anywhere. Instead, reframe your thinking to remember these key things.1. You Were Hired for a ReasonHeres the simple truth Unless youre a very skilled good actor or you blatantly lied on your resume, the hiring manager saw something in you that made him or her believe you could do that job and, ultimately, want to hire you.Especially these days, when hiring processes are long and often include phone screenings, personality or aptitude tests, and multiple interviews with stakeholders from across the company, you probably didnt just sneak in under the radar. The company had plenty of opportunities to evaluate you and make sure you were the person it was looking for- and guess what? You made the cut.Does that mean youre going to be able to do everything perfectly the minute you arrive to the office? No. But it does mean that whoever hired you thinks you can do it- even if it takes you some time to adjust. And heres another reality Maybe you truly dont have the skills n ecessary to do the job perfectly. Even so, the hiring manager may have hired you because he or she saw the potential in you, combined with a willingness to learn. And if the company that hired you (which has hired many, many people and likely knows what it is looking for) thinks you can do it, theres no reason to doubt yourself. 2. Doubting Yourself Is What Will Really Sabotage YouWhen you start getting bogged down by thoughts of being underqualified, it can easily lead to all sorts of irrational thoughts Should I just quit? Should I tell someone? Theyre going to find out eventually. But by letting these thoughts consume you, youre likely overlooking the one thing you should be doing embracing the challenge to overcome your weaknesses and work toward success. Constantly doubting yourself is only going to continue to tear down your confidence. Every new assignment will be another impossible task every meeting with your boss will potentially be the one where he or she finds out that yo ure a fraud. Youll attempt to walk on eggshells (or just give up completely), biding your time until someone fires you for your self-perceived incompetence. Get it out of your head that youre not qualified for your job, and start focusing on what you can do to start achieving success.3. To Really Be Successful, You Should Feel UnderqualifiedThe great thing about this situation is that the feeling of being uncomfortable is one that can push you to do more than you imagined possible. Just think If you came into a job knowing how to do everything perfectly, youd simply come in, do your job, and leave- every day. Thered be nothing to push you to learn new skills, develop new competencies, or rise to new levels. Youd be good at your job. But youd be bored.Feeling underqualified means you have room to grow- and gives you the push you need to make that happen. Feeling underqualified should, in your mind, equate to I have to figure out how to do this, no matter what it takes. Does it mean s tepping out of your comfort zone to learn how to lead meetings? How to collaborate with a virtual team? How to organize your time so you can manage multiple projects at once? For me, it was learning how to be a manager- including confronting, disciplining, and coaching employees- with absolutely no prior experience.Instead of getting bogged down by doubt, let this feeling force you out of your comfort zone and spur you to learn as much as you can. Find a mentor, take online courses, research, and take risks. Do whatever it takes to rise to the challenge. The thrill of accomplishment is much more satisfying and exhilarating if you are challenged to work for it, rather than if you come in knowing how to do everything perfectly from the get-go. Maybe, in fact, you should never take a job you feel qualified for. Photo of confused man courtesy of Shutterstock.

When Bono, Warhol famous people were rejected, too

When Bono, Warhol famous people were rejected, too When Bono, Warhol famous people were rejected, too The accumulation of rejection letters, voicemails, emails, and, yes, unfortunately, text messages, is a good sign for any job search.  You need to go through a lot of maybes and uh-unhs before you find the right YES!So you can imagine that famous people who were once not famous got a lot of rejection letters on their way up.Part of any search for a fit in your career involves the exploration of possibilities.  The more possibilities and the more opportunities you explore, the more rejections you’ll receive. But you’ll also get something very valuable with those turn-downs: a better sense of where your talents do belong. You see, it takes some effort to find out what we’re not in order to find out what we are, and where we belong. So while I know it’s foolish to ask you to enjoy those rejection texts, at the very least, perhaps you can understand the vital role they play in getting you to your destination.

1 (Overlooked) Tip To Raise Your Responses 40-70%

1 (Overlooked) Tip To Raise Your Responses 40-70% 1 (Overlooked) Tip To Raise Your Responses 40-70% “I’ve fallen down the rabbit hole of filling out numerous applications on the online job posting sites and playing that game. I know I’m getting lost in the shuffle. I’m being told the place to be seen is LinkedIn, but with all the features LinkedIn has, it’s hard to know what gives you the biggest bang for your buck.”   LinkedIn hosts 500 million users, 138 million of whom live in the United States. The platform features 3 million job listings, and a plethora of fancy features presented as tools to help you through your job search. Tools that genuinely help the job hunter definitely get my vote, especially since the typical response rate from the major job boards is a paltry 1-2%. But did you know there are things you can do on LinkedIn that are {gasp!} just regular things â€" no special sauce necessary? Here’s the biggest unTool I see on LinkedIn, which could skyrocket your job search in an instant: the key is the “invite” feature, and what that really allows you to do. Put Yourself In The Recruiter’s Shoes Most job hunters drive the job search from their own perspective: it’s about the role you want, near where you live, in the time frame you need. You network only barely past the point where it suits your immediate interests, then you’re done. You reach out to the people most likely to serve your purposes. Some of those folks respond, however, many do not. So it seems like you’re done. Understand this: when a LinkedIn member has the word “recruiter” in his or her title, that invites automatic, constant bombardment of invitations to connect from folks hither and yon â€" they may be in the recruiter’s field, or they may not be. Their expertise may be what the recruiter deals with, or it may not be. Too often, these requests are the randomest of random, and â€" news flash: the recruiter doesn’t have time for it. They’re All Reading The Same Stuff If YOU aren’t too terribly turned on by an invitation that says, “I’d like to add you to my network on LinkedIn,” then why do you think the recruiter or anyone else would be? The instant, pre-written, pre-formatted, robo-invitation to connect doesn’t excite anyone. Worse, all it does is showcase you as exactly the same as the 1,000 other people who so thoughtlessly invited the recruiter to connect on that particular day. This is why your invitations remain un-responded to. This is why when you go back and check to see how many new recruiter connections you have, the number has either not moved at all, or barely moved into the single digits. And this is the place where most job hunters stop â€" it’s hard to know what else to do at this juncture. But I’m going to tell you what to do from here forward: Strike A Balance Between the Typical Invite And Your Own Value-Added Message An unanswered invitation to connect is by no means the end of the road. Click on the profile of a person to whom you previously sent an invitation. Guess what you’ll find right under their profile picture? Two things: Where there used to be a button saying “connect,” now that button indicates your previous invitation to connect is “pending.” And right next to that is the glorious button that says, “message.” No more sending the standard robo-invitation and hitting a brick wall. No more cramming a 150-character custom message into an invitation. No more using up the InMails you paid for in your premium account. After you invite a person to connect, whether they accept the invitation or not, you can message them directly. Do you know what happens when you message the relevant person directly? Picture this: you're no longer an also-ran in the rat race towards the roles you want. You're no longer a nameless, faceless entity on an ATS resume. You just graduated from the standard 1-2% response rate the job boards offer, to now a 40-70% response rate from a real human being. And Now…It’s YOUR Turn Don’t revert back to the meMeME perspective. This is your opportunity to show that you care about the individual person, the organization they represent, and have some SPECIFIC expertise to bring to the table. {Here’s a pro tip: your expertise is not that you’re “motivated,” ok? Please. Just stop.} Without being confined to a character limit, there’s nothing wrong with opening your message by saying you hope the person is having a great day. Take a half-second to act like a normal human being. Next, show what you know about the company. If you pull this piece from either the “history” or the “about us” pages on the corporate web site, I will jump through the Internet, across space and time, and kill you. Let’s simply avoid all that kerfuffle by you investing the time and effort to uncovering some current, newsworthy information about the company instead. Drop that into your message. Then, spend 1 sentence on the specific set of professional skills you have to offer that could be of interest for the organization at this particular moment in time. Connecting directly with the person you need makes a tremendous difference in your job search being long and arduous, or shorter and more fruitful. Step up and over the ignored invitation to connect â€" the buck doesn’t stop there. Use this strategy to still get your value-laden message through to the person you want to see it. Did you know the simple step to take to make sure you ALWAYS have all the skills required for a particular job opening you have your eye on? We go over that in, “5 Secret Job Search Hacks For The Age 50+ Job-Hunter!” It’s a free online presentation that shows you step-by-step {screenshot-by-screenshot} how to build your LinkedIn profile the right way (not the just-copy-and-paste-your-resume way). Heres how to defeat the most common workplace fears

Here's how to defeat the most common workplace fears Here's how to defeat the most common workplace fears It may be Halloween season, but you don’t have to be afraid of ghouls and goblins to experience fear at work. Here’s how to overcome the things that terrify you the most about your job.Coming into work on Day 1Sometimes, the hardest part of a position is starting it.From pre-first-day jitters spent worrying if you’ll make it there on time, to how well you’ll fit in with your coworkers, it’s normal to feel uncertain about what’s ahead.Plus, when you finally make it through the office door, your surroundings are new, you may not recognize anyone except the HR manager you interviewed with, and there’s a whole lot of new jargon to get used to.Doing things like preparing as much as possible beforehand - from mapping out your commute, to picking out your clothes and learning about your new responsibilities, to remembering your accomplishments - can help you cope with first-day anxiety.Giving that presentation to your team - plus your bossIn this case, practice really does make perfect. There’s no way to predict what could happen during a presentation, or how receptive the group will be to your perspective,  but being prepared by throughly knowing your presentation material and having multiple, quick solutions to potential technical problems can help keep a lid on your nerves.Journalist, digital media consultant, and investor John Boitnott writes in Entrepreneur about how to “use activities” during a presentation.“Sometimes a simple activity is enough to drive your point home. It could be something as simple as having your boss or team write down their goals and then having brainstorming session on how to accomplish those goals. You could also hand out quizzes and ask your audience to guess what your next slide is going to be. You can even split the group up by having 20 percent of them move to one side of the room to demonstrate what your goal of 20 percent growth will look like, instead of using a slide with a graph,” Boitnott writes.Gettin g people out of their seats and out of their own minds may serve you well, depending on the nature of your presentation.Worrying that everyone else will find out that you’re an impostorInstead of brooding over looming thoughts that people will discover that you only got your job through luck - and that you have no real talent - remind yourself of  all the success you’ve already had in your life to help you push through impostor syndrome.Think about your accomplishments and cherish the fact that you had many good things going for you before this job came along, and you will still have them several positions into the future. Also don’t strive for perfection - do the best you can with what you have. But balance this with look for ways to improve without getting too off track.Asking for a raiseWhile you should never do something like threaten to quit if you don’t get a raise, there are key things you should do instead. After writing about how you should be able to clearly talk about your accomplishments when asking for a raise in Fortune, Citi Cards CEO Jud Linville details how you should approach your supervisor during the meeting, among other points.“Set up a meeting and present yourself with conviction, self-assurance, and professionalism. Deliver your opening statement, support it with your facts, and assertively request exactly what you want. Then, be quiet and await the response. Do not argue. You want to employ logic and reasoning while avoiding making your boss feel criticized or defensive. Keep the emotion out of it and try to employ ‘I’ statements to discuss your perspective and needs. Use phrasing such as, ‘When I consider my accomplishments so far and compare my salary to others in my field’” Linville writes. You don’t have to be a newbie on the job to get nervous about parts of your work, but whatever you do,  don’t forget to own what scares you the most.

Salary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual Benefit

Salary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual Benefit Salary Negotiation Tips Requesting an Unusual Benefit When is the best time to ask for a perk that is out of the ordinary?Q: After nearly a year of unemployment, I feel fortunate to have started a part-time position as a contracts manager. A former colleague created this opportunity for me with the expectation that I would bring work into the firm that I could then manage. The position is expected to grow into full time employment, but there’s no guarantee. There are some things I like about my new job, including the flexibility and easy commute, along with the responsibility and challenge to grow the business. But there are some real red flags, too. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been interviewing with an established aerospace firm, and while nothing is certain, I have a very positive feeling about how the interviews have been going and so far, I like what I’ve experienced in the interview process. The aerospace job potentially offers long-term security, opportunity for training, good benefits, and a positive work environment. I th ink it would be a good opportunity, and if I were still unemployed, I’m sure I would have jumped at the chance. I am very interested in pursuing the aerospace job, but would like to negotiate for a somewhat unusual benefit. Can you suggest an appropriate way that I could feel people out about the possibility of bringing my 13-year-old border collie to work when I’m at the interview? In my last job, the dog bowl in the break room allowed me to bring up the question. I appreciate any advice you might have for me.A: The key pivotal issue for you seems to be can you bring your dog with you to work. You ask “can you suggest an appropriate way that I could feel people out about bringing my dog to work when I met the interview?”I wouldn’t try to put it into the interviewing process. It is an example of a benefit or perk for which you will be negotiating. You don’t want to bring up any of these items until the appropriate time. So you should lock in a firm offer, and then go on about the interviewing experience.Bringing a dog to work is certainly a perk to negotiate. But since it is an unusual request, it’s something the employer will have to consider and discuss amongst themselves. Bringing it up or talking about it as an item of negotiation in the early stages may only put a wrench in the works. You don’t want that.So follow the instructions in my book “Negotiating Your Salary: How to Make $1000 a Minute” and postpone a serious discussion about your dog coming to work until you know there’s an offer. When you have an offer, that’s the time to bring it up. In your case, it seems that you can bring it up with the added incentive that this will actually make the difference between closing a deal or not.As far as working it into the conversation goes, simply say “I have an unusual request. Other employers I have worked for have allowed me this benefit. It won’t cost the company anything. In fact, if we could arrange for this one benefit, then I am almost certain we have a deal. The request is bringing my dog to work.” You’ll be able to take it from there I’m sure.

How to Follow Up After a Networking Event With Examples

How to Follow Up After a Networking Event With Examples How to Follow Up After a Networking Event With Examples Timing is of the essence when writing a follow-up letter to a contact you met at a networking event. By following up, you solidify your relationship with that person. Following up also gives you a chance to ask a particular question, or even arrange a time to meet one-on-one. Its best to follow up within 24 hours of meeting. Express your appreciation for their time and include details pertaining to the conversation you had. Tips for Following Up With a Contact from a Networking Event Follow up within 24 hours. You want to follow up quickly so that the acquaintance remembers you. Send an email or letter within 24 hours of meeting him or her.Mention a conversation from the event. To help remind the person who you are, mention a conversation or topic you discussed at the event. For example, you might say, “I enjoyed speaking with you after the keynote lecture at the XYZ Conference.” A quick reference to your conversation will help jog a person’s memory.Offer to help. When making a networking contact, it is always a good idea to offer help before asking for a favor. If there is any way you can help the contact, do so (perhaps you had offered to connect him with someone, or maybe she asked you to forward an article you were discussing). Ask to meet up. Suggest a time to meet up for coffee if you live in the same area. You might phrase it as a chance to continue a particular conversation you were having at the event. For example, you might write, “I would love to continue our discussion of best practices in cloud computing. Perhaps we could meet next week and discuss further over coffee?”Connect on LinkedIn. Connect with the contact on LinkedIn to further strengthen your professional relationship. Once you get to know the person better, you might ask him or her to write you a recommendation on LinkedIn. However, don’t ask for this favor in your follow-up email. Focus on your connection, rather than asking for anything too specific. Edit, edit, edit.  Whether you send your follow-up note as a letter or an email, be sure to thoroughly edit the message before sending it. Remember that this is a professional message. You want to make a strong, positive impression. Therefore, make sure there are no spelling or grammar errors in your letter. Follow-up Letter to a Contact From a Networking Event Mr. Alan ThompsonABC Legal Associates123 Main St.Albany, NY 12201November 19, 2018Dear Mr. Thompson,It was a pleasure meeting you at the Albany Young Business Professionals Reception last Friday. Your insights into the future of environmental law were fascinating and only increased my interest in the field. As you recommended, I contacted John Smith to discuss potential job openings at his firm. I will be meeting with him next weekend. Please let me know if you hear of any other job openings for a paralegal in your firm, or if you have any further suggestions for people whom I should contact regarding open positions. I have attached my resume for your review.Thank you so much for your assistance. I hope to see you at the Albany Young Business Professionals Cocktail Reception in the fall.Sincerely,Jane Adams234 Longview Rd.Saratoga Springs, NY 12286518-555-1234jane.adamsemail.com Expand Following Up Via Email If you send the  letter as an email message, you do not need to include the persons contact information in the email. Be sure to include your contact information in your email signature, though. In the subject of the message, include your name so your contact knows who the message is coming from. (For example,  Subject:  Jane Adams - Update) Your message will have a better chance of being opened and read if the recipient is aware of who is writing.

University of Michigans TurtleCell Takes Top Honors at 2013 ASME IShow

University of Michigan’s TurtleCell Takes Top Honors at 2013 ASME IShow University of Michigan’s TurtleCell Takes Top Honors at 2013 ASME IShow University of Michigan’s TurtleCell Takes Top Honors at 2013 ASME IShow ASME President Madiha El Mehelmy Kotb (far left) and ASME Immediate Past President Marc Goldsmith (far right) present the ASME IShow's first prize to Nick Turnbull and Paul Schrems of the TurtleCell team from the University of Michigan. ASME hosted its 2013 Innovation Showcase (or IShow) on Saturday, June 22, as part of the Societys Annual Meeting in Indianapolis.   First place honors and a corresponding check for $10,000 went to the University of Michigan team for TurtleCell, a protective iPhone 5 case featuring proprietary technology that builds tangle-free, retractable earbuds right into the case. Second place went to Sparo Labs of Washington University in St. Louis for its Low Cost Spirometer, a novel solution for asthma sufferers around the world. Third place went to Harvards Theratech, an innovative improvement on current methods for concentrated drug delivery. Hosted this year at the JW Marriott Hotel in downtown Indianapolis, the 2013 IShow featured 10 teams representing universities around the U.S. and the world, including Bournemouth University (United Kingdom) Brigham Young University, Harvard, Johns Hopkins, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (with three different teams in the competition), Tufts, the University of Michigan, and Washington University in St. Louis. Its been two years that weve been working on it now, and weve been through over 40 prototype iterations, said Paul Schrems of the victorious TurtleCell team. The honor of winning the IShow will go a long way for us. TurtleCell, like each of the projects it beat out for top honors, has young engineer/entrepreneurs behind it focused laser-like on bringing a great design to success in the marketplace. Said TurtleCells Nick Turner: We launched on Kickstarter on Thursday night, and were blitzing the market right now. Social media, optimized press releases, and getting peoples eyes on our website - were trying to drive sales there. Hopefully, by the end of the year, not only are we shipping but were moving into retail stores. We should have units ready to go by December, hopefully, you know - stocking stuffers. More than two dozen students from 10 universities competed in the 2013 Innovation Showcase in Indianapolis. The teams were often participants in innovative programs at their schools designed to teach students the range of skills needed to bring a product from the drawing board to the real world. MITs OneBin, for example, which aims to offer the world a better way to pass through heightened airport security, was conceived that way. As Jon Hickey of the OneBin team put it, Were all part of the System Design Management program at MIT, and we had a product development and design class together. Our professors said, Go think about the things that frustrate you in the area of travel, and come up with an idea to solve it. And so thats what we did. The full-day competition featured a presentation from each of the teams. They pitched their projects to and then faced stark questioning from a world-class panel of judges. Each of the engineers on the judging panel was a proven innovator with deep expertise in the process of designing a product and bringing it to market. I love the idea of having people compete just on innovation, versus on a certain technology, said judge Stacy DelVecchio of Caterpillar, who is also the new president-elect of the Society of Women Engineers. The IShow reminds me of Edison talking about how he never invented anything that he didnt already know the market for. The fact that they have to do financials, competitive analysis, who are the customers, it really gets them thinking. All in attendance might have agreed with the words of Dave Dugan, the events master of ceremonies, who said, These kids are amazing. Those judges question them hard - and there isnt anything they havent got the answer to! Theyre going to succeed at whatever they put their minds to. Thank you Dave - we agree and couldnt have said it better ourselves. Mark your calendars: the 2014 IShow will take place on April 28, 2014 in Washington, D.C. Joshua Olesker, ASME Public Information

Understand Deployments Before You Join the Navy

Understand Deployments Before You Join the Navy Understand Deployments Before You Join the Navy Considering a profession within the Navy  should not come lightly (or any service for that matter), especially if you are not comfortable with ocean-going vessels (ships and submarines).  The vast majority of Navy deployments are at sea on Naval ships and submarines, though there are many deployments since 9-11 that allow for Navy personnel to deploy to various ports and bases around the world and in combat zones filling joint military billets. Regardless, expect to spend up to a half a year or more at sea every few years. Where You Are Stationed Depending on where you are stationed will typically determine the locations you will deploy. For instance, ships and submarines stationed in Norfolk VA will deploy throughout the Atlantic Ocean, the Mediterranean Sea, as well as around the Coast of Africa and into the Persian Gulf (depending on the regions with the most turmoil). Ships stationed on the West Coast will deploy throughout the Pacific, visiting U.S. ports in Japan, South Korea, and Hawaii. With recent conflicts, ships from the West Coast, Pearl Harbor, and Japan will also cruise to the Middle East and into the Persian Gulf. If you are stationed as part of the air wing commands, you will deploy on larger ships but have a facility to do maintenance and daily work on a Naval Air Base like Oceana in Virginia Beach (outside Norfolk VA), North Island in Coronado CA, outside San Diego Naval Station. The larger ships (such as aircraft carriers) are small cities, with more than 5,000 sailors aboard. These are always deployed to areas where the United States interests are being threatened, so there is usually little time for port visits - though there are some. On a carrier or any ship for that matter pretty much every job there is in the Navy makes the machine work like a moving city. There are cooks aboard. There are medical personnel aboard. There are communication and computer specialists aboard. There are finance, administrative, and law clerks aboard. There is pretty much every single Navy job aboard. If you join the Navy, youre going to spend some time deployed at sea. Theres no way around it. Of course, some ratings (jobs) spend more time deployed at sea than others. Examples would be aircrew and aircraft maintenance, sonar technicians, boatswain mates, and more.   Special Operations Deployments There is a very small group of people in the Navy who deploy quite often, but not necessarily on ships. They may be flown into a region and fast rope or parachute onto a ship for a temporary stay to perform a special operations mission, but the members of the Navy SEAL and Navy EOD units tend to deploy to forward deployed bases around the world where and when needed. Sometimes these quick deployments may last only a few weeks, or their forward deployed, and travel status throughout a region are typically 6-9 months long. These deployment cycles are similar to ships and submarines. However, the members of the special operations community do not stay on board ship or submarine for too long. If visiting a ship or submarine, they will be flown, drive their zodiacs, mini-submarines, or swim to shore depending upon the mission. Time On Ship Or Submarine Most Sailors are assigned to ships or submarines for three year periods, followed by three years of shore duty. That does not mean they will be deployed to sea for the entire three years that they are assigned to a ship or submarine. The ships and subs also spend a significant amount of time docked at their home port for regular maintenance for both machine and crew. Most ships deploy to sea duty for months at a time (usually for six months, but up to nine months). Then they return to their home port for four or five months (during which time there will be several one or two week cruises for training purposes). One great thing about coming back home to port is you will always be near a beach town.  It is something else to consider when thinking about joining the Navy. Just because you are on shore duty assignment, doesnt mean you wont get deployed or travel to other bases around the world. The Navy will require both volunteers and non-volunteers (about 10,000 Sailors per year) to do  Individual Augmentee Duty. Those selected work outside of their regular Navy job, and are deployed to Iraq and Afghanistan (usually for 12 months) to assist the Army and Marine Corps with combat missions and patrols.

Important Active Listening Skills and Techniques

Important Active Listening Skills and Techniques Important Active Listening Skills and Techniques Whats active listening, and why is it important for your career? Active listening is the process by which an individual secures information from another individual or group. The “active” element involves taking steps to draw out details that might not otherwise be shared. Active listeners avoid interrupting at all costs, summarize and repeat back what they have heard, and observe body language to give them an extra level of understanding.   Active listening is a helpful skill for any worker to develop. It helps you truly understand what people are saying in conversations and meetings (and not just what you want to hear, or think you hear). During interviews, it can help you build rapport with your interviewer.   What Is Active Listening? Like  critical thinking  and  problem-solving, active listening is a  soft skill  that’s held in high regard by employers. When interviewing for jobs, using active listening techniques can help show the interviewer how your interpersonal skills can draw people out. Active listening redirects your focus from what is going on inside of your head to the needs of your prospective employer or interviewer. That can help reduce your nervousness during an interview.   By placing your focus, through active listening, squarely upon the interviewer, you prove that you: Are interested in the organization’s challenges and successesAre ready to help them problem-solve work issuesAre a team player as opposed to being nothing more than a self-absorbed job candidate. It’s important to not interrupt, or worse, try to answer the question before you know what the interviewer is asking. Listen carefully to the interviewer’s questions, ask for clarification if necessary, and wait until the interviewer has finished talking to respond. Examples of Active Listening Techniques There are plenty of active listening techniques that will improve the impression you can make at a job interview. Active listening techniques include: Building trust and establishing rapportDemonstrating concernParaphrasing to show understandingNonverbal cues  which show understanding such as nodding, eye contact, and leaning forwardBrief verbal affirmations like “I see,” “I know,” “Sure,” “Thank you,” or “I understand”Asking open-ended questionsAsking specific questions to seek clarificationWaiting to disclose your opinionDisclosing similar experiences to show understanding Examples of Active Listening Responses It’s often easier to learn by reading examples. Here are some examples of statements and questions employed with active listening: Building Trust and Establishing Rapport:  â€œTell me what I can do to help.” “I was really impressed to read on your website how you donate five percent of each sale to charity.”Demonstrating Concern: “I am eager to help you; I know you are going through some tough challenges.” “I know how hard a corporate restructuring can be â€" how is staff morale at this point?”  Paraphrasing: “So, you are saying that the uncertainty about who will be your new supervisor is creating stress for you.” “So, you think that we need to build up our social media marketing efforts.”   Brief Verbal Affirmation: “I understand that you would like more frequent feedback about your performance.” “Thank you. I appreciate your time in speaking to me.”Asking Open-Ended Questions:  â€œI can see that Johns criticism was very upsetting to you. Which aspect of his critique was most disturbing?” “It’s clear that the current situation is intolerable for you. What changes would you like to see?”Asking Specific Questions: “How long do you expect your hiring process to last?” “What is your average rate of staff turnover?” Waiting to Disclose Your Opinion: “Tell me more about your proposal to reorganize the department.” “Can you please provide some history for me regarding your relationship with your former business partner?”  Disclosing Similar Situations:  â€œI was also very conflicted about returning to work after the birth of my son.” “I had the responsibility of terminating four of my personnel, due to downsizing, over the last two years. Even if it’s necessary, it never gets easier.”   More Active Listening Skills ValidationEmotional IntelligenceProblem SensitivityCourtesyProfessionalismNonverbal CommunicationTransparencyIntegrityHumilityProactivityAccepting Constructive CriticismCreating and Managing ExpectationsConfidenceEmpathyCompassionUnderstandingObservationAttention to DetailVocal ToneSensitivity to Religious and Ethnic DiversitySelf-AwarenessSituational AwarenessInterpretationIdentify and Manage EmotionsUnderstanding Hidden Needs of OthersBody LanguageFacilitating Group DiscussionReaching Consensus Collaboration By employing these active listening techniques, you will impress your interviewer as a thoughtful, analytical, highly desirable candidate for the position. Think about possible situations that may occur during an interview and come up with strategies to allow you to listen actively. Improving Your Soft Skills Never underestimate the power of “soft skills” (also known as “people skills”) like active listening,  problem-solving,  flexibility, self-motivation,  leadership, and  teamwork. Your CV or resume may look great, but don’t forget to nourish your  soft skills.Especially for young, first-time job candidates with limited work experience, these people skills often are the deciding factor in whether an employer will be willing to take the risk in hiring them over others who may have more experience (but possibly weaker interpersonal communications talents). Don’t forget to highlight your soft skills in your interview (and even in your resume).

Is It a Good Idea to Be Friends With Your Boss

Is It a Good Idea to Be Friends With Your Boss Is It a Good Idea to Be Friends With Your Boss But that doesnt mean  our bosses are our  friends. Spherion found that  a  slight majority (51 percent) of employees say that their bosses are not their friends, and that only 46 percent of workers ever spend time with their bosses outside the office. Forty-one percent of employees said they consider their relationships with their bosses no matter how good those relationships are to be exclusively professional. For me, Spherions survey raises an interesting question:  Should employees be friends with their bosses? Ive always felt that the answer is Yes. Why would I want to work for someone I didnt consider good enough to be my friend? (Shoutout to my current manager, who often Skypes me to talk about bourbon. Shoutout to our CEO, who gave me a signed copy of  The Basketball Diaries when I moved out of state.) According to Spherion Division President Sandy Mazur, though, Im thinking about this all wrong. Theres a lot more to boss-employee relationships than whether or not you think your manager is cool. The Benefits and Drawbacks of Being Friends With Your Boss If you look at Spherions survey results, it seems that being close  with your boss can bring some serious benefits. Fifty-six percent of the employees surveyed said people with more personal relationships with their bosses get more one-on-one time with their managers, and 52 percent of employees said workers who are friendly with their bosses get more schedule flexibility. But heres the thing: those benefits only seem good to you. They dont necessarily look all that great to your colleagues, who may believe (rightly or wrongly) that youre receiving unfair special treatment from your boss as a result of your friendship. As Michele Lando has written for this website, your coworkers perceptions of you can seriously  impact your career. If your coworkers think youre the beneficiary of some sketchy favoritism, they may make your life a living hell in the office. [Employees]  don’t want to be seen as someone who is gaining favor, Mazur says. They want everyone to be equally rewarded and recognized.  [Maybe that's why] 66 percent of employees dont want to have closer relationships with their bosses than they already have. Furthermore, four out of five employees in Spherions survey said their relationships with their bosses had positive impacts on their careers but, as Mazur points out, those four-in-five employees may not be friends their bosses. In fact, it may be the one in five who say their relationships with their bosses have negatively impacted their careers that are friendly with their bosses. Consider this: If you are very close friends with your boss, you may be reluctant to leave your company even if leaving would mean taking a great new opportunity to boost your career. You (and Your Boss) Have to Do Whats Right for You Close, personal relationships between bosses and employees are double-edged swords, which means employees should think long and hard about the kinds of relationships they cultivate with their higher-ups. You certainly dont want to be seen as someone who is getting special perks or favors because of  that relationship, Mazur says. As with any friendship in a work environment, you have to be very careful and cautious about how you build those relationships. Ultimately, Mazur believes that how friendly bosses and employees get is a personal choice. Theres no clearly correct answer here. Its a very personal choice â€" theres no right or wrong way to do this, Mazur says. It’s kind of up to the employee and the employer to walk that fine line. Speaking of the employer: Bosses play a role in determining how personal or professional their  relationships are with employees, too. [As a boss,] your employees  are important to you. Their lives are important to you, and their families are important to you. Thats what makes solid teams, Mazur explains. But its up to you [and what you and your employees are comfortable with]. And theres one final element to consider in all of this: What counts as friendship depends, in large part, on how we each personally draw the lines between friendly and professional. Its such a personal choice, and people define friendship in different ways as well, Mazur says. I consider all of my staff my friends but I dont go to plays with them. But were there for one another.
